Yesterday's Reflection

Memorial of Saint Benedict, Abbot

The Reading

If you seek her like silver and search for her as hidden treasures - then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. - Proverbs 2:4-6

Reflection

Seek her like silver. The wisdom in Proverbs is always described with the feminine pronoun - she is a treasure to be pursued, a voice to be heard, a banquet host who calls from the heights of the city. She requires the full engagement: ear, heart, voice, and the physical labor of searching. The seeking is not passive.

I sought the Lord and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. The psalm's testimony is the evidence of the seeking that was not passive: I sought, he answered, he delivered. The rescue came at the end of the active seeking, not before it.

Everyone who has given up anything for my name will receive a hundred times more. The hundredfold is the answer to Peter's question, and it is a real answer. The woman who has given up something - comfort, career, freedom, the life she imagined - for the sake of the name deserves to hear that the receiving is in progress and the inheritance is coming.

The Challenge

Name what you have given up for the sake of the name. Then name one thing from the hundredfold that you have already received - not in the age to come, in this present age. The receiving is in progress. Let the counting of what has already come sustain the giving up that is still required.

One Prayer

Lord, I seek wisdom like silver. Let the search produce the finding. And let me name the hundredfold that is already in progress - what has been received, not only what has been given. Precious Blood of Jesus, save us. Amen.
