"Mary, called Magdalene... Joanna... Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources." - Luke 8:2-3

Sister, today returns to the fifth sorrow - the crucifixion - which your family prayed with the others three days ago at the feast. Coming back to it alone, slower, it helps to know who else was standing there, because today's Gospel names them before the story ever gets to the cross.

Mary Magdalene. Luke introduces her here, early, as one of the women who traveled with Jesus and provided for the whole mission out of what she had. She is not a minor character who shows up once at the end. She is present from the ordinary days - the walking, the funding, the unglamorous work of keeping a preacher and twelve men fed and moving - all the way through to the worst day, when Luke tells us later that the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance, watching. Same woman. Same faithfulness, extended across years rather than shown once in a crisis.

That continuity is the sorrow speaking today more than the moment itself. Standing at a cross for one afternoon is one kind of faithfulness. Providing, quietly, day after day, for years before anyone knew the story would end that way - that is a different kind, and it is the kind most women actually practice. Nobody sets out to be present for a crucifixion. You end up there because you were already present for everything ordinary that came before it, and you didn't stop showing up once the road turned hard.

Today is also Ember Friday, and while the fast matters, let it stay in the background. The center of today is the sorrow and the company who stood in it - Mary, Joanna, Susanna, and the others whose names got lost. Pray the fifth sorrow today specifically for the women in your own life who have been present for the ordinary, unglamorous years of caring for someone, long before anyone called it a sorrow at all.

Pray the fifth sorrow - the Crucifixion - alone today, slowly. Name one woman in your own life whose faithfulness has been the quiet, unglamorous, years-long kind rather than the dramatic kind, and pray for her by name.

Lord, Mary Magdalene provided for you in the ordinary days and stood by you in the worst one, and it was the same faithfulness both times. Give me that kind of constancy - present for the years before I'm ever asked to be present for the cross. Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us. Amen.
