The Reading

"Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.'" - John 11:21-22

Reflection

Martha doesn't compose herself before she speaks to Jesus. She runs out to meet him - the grieving woman who could not stay home when she heard he was coming - and she says the thing she has been carrying. Lord, if you had been here. It is an accusation and an act of faith in the same breath.

Notice what is in that sentence. She believes he could have prevented it. She is telling him so. And she is still talking to him, still expecting something. Even now. Even here. Even with the tomb right behind her.

Many women know the prayer that holds the grievance and the faith together. The prayer that says: this should not have happened, and I am still here, and I still believe you can do something. That is not a failure of faith. It is the kind of faith Jesus waited at the tomb to hear.

Jesus calls her name. He asks her the question. She answers: yes, Lord, I have come to believe. Not I have always believed or I never doubted. I have come to believe. The faith is something she arrived at. In the grief, at the tomb, through the running out to meet him.

Sister, your faith that is still being arrived at is the kind that gets honored in this Gospel.

The Challenge

Where are you saying Martha's prayer right now - the one that holds the grievance and the faith in the same sentence? Name it honestly. Then say her answer: yes, Lord, I have come to believe. Not because you have resolved everything. Because the person asking is Jesus.

One Prayer

Lord, if you had been here. But even now. Yes, I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God. That yes is what I have today. Precious Blood of Jesus, save us. Amen.
