"I will turn their mourning into joy, I will console and gladden them after their sorrows." - Jeremiah 31:13

God promises to gather one from a city, two from a clan. Not in groups, not by category, but one by one. The specific person who wandered, brought back. The specific mourning, turned. The promise is individual enough to hold whoever you are carrying.

The thorny soil in the Gospel has a particular version that many women know well. The anxiety Jesus names is real, but there is a form of anxiety that comes from holding everyone else's needs so closely that your own soil never gets tended. The worry is not about riches - it is about whether your children are okay, whether the marriage is solid, whether the parent who is aging will be all right, whether you are doing enough. These are not selfish concerns. But when they crowd out the space where God is trying to do something in you specifically, they function like thorns. Exhausted soil does not bear fruit.

Sister, you cannot tend everyone else's ground if your own is choked. The invitation Jeremiah voices - return, I will gather you, I will turn your mourning into joy - is for you, not just for the people you are praying to return.

Where is your soil right now? Not the people around you - yours. Is there room in your life for the word to grow in you, or has the care-for-everyone-else filled the space where your own formation should be? Name one thing that would give your soil a little more room. Then do it this week without apologizing for it.

Lord, you promised to turn mourning into joy and to console after sorrows. That is for me, not only for the people I am holding. Tend my soil. Clear the thorns - even the ones that grew from love. Precious Blood of Jesus, save us. Amen.
