Yesterday's Reflection

Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene

The Reading

I sought him whom my soul loves. I sought him but did not find him. - Song of Songs 3:1b-2a

Reflection

Barely had I left them when I found him whom my heart loves. The Song of Songs is the interior life of the woman who would not stop looking. The seeking that continues in the dark, through the city, asking strangers - this is what the feast of Mary Magdalene is about. She could have left the tomb when the evidence said it was over. She stayed. And she was found by the one she was seeking.

Your love is better than life. This is the conclusion of a woman at an empty tomb before sunrise. It is not a sentiment. It is the result of choosing love over safety, staying over leaving, the dark garden over the comfortable upper room.

The Challenge

Where have you been looking for the Lord in a place that seems to have nothing left? What is the empty-looking tomb in your life right now where you are tempted to stop showing up? Stay one more day. And name the moment when you have heard your name spoken - the specific recognition that changed something. That is the I-have-seen-the-Lord that you carry.

One Prayer

Lord, I seek you even in the dark. Speak my name. Let me recognize the voice. Precious Blood of Jesus, save us. Amen.
