Yesterday's Reflection

Saturday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time

The Reading

Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. - Psalm 85:11-12

Reflection

Kindness and truth shall meet. The psalm imagines the restoration as the reconciliation of things that have been in tension - the kind response and the true response, the just response and the peaceful one. In the restored land they do not oppose each other; they meet, they kiss, they spring from the earth and look down from heaven simultaneously.

I will raise up the fallen hut of David. Amos ends not with judgment but with the hut being raised. The specific promise to the specific ruin. The land replanted. The harvest so abundant that the planting overlaps with it.

New wine into fresh wineskins. The woman who makes room for what God is doing in this season rather than trying to pour it into the structures of the previous season receives both the wine and the wineskins intact. The flexibility is not compromise; it is the vessel being adequate to the gift.

The Challenge

Kindness and truth meeting in your life right now: name one situation where they have been at odds. What would their meeting look like - the specific kindness that does not sacrifice the truth, and the specific truth that does not sacrifice the kindness?

One Prayer

Lord, let kindness and truth meet in me. Let the restoration be specific: raise the fallen hut, wall up the breaches, give me the new wineskins. Precious Blood of Jesus, I trust in you. Amen.
