Yesterday's Reflection

Tuesday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time

The Reading

Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets. - Matthew 7:12

Reflection

Hezekiah's prayer begins with adoration before it makes a request. O Lord enthroned on the cherubim - you alone are God over all kingdoms. You made heaven and earth. The prayer grounds the request in the character of the one being asked. The God who made heaven and earth can certainly handle Sennacherib's letter.

Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. The golden rule is not an abstract principle - it is the empathy-exercise applied as an ethical standard. Place yourself inside the other person's situation. What would you want done to you there? Do that. The whole law and all the prophets compress into that single act of perspective-taking.

How narrow the gate. The narrow road is not crowded. The woman on the narrow road may feel alone in ways that the wide road never produces - the isolation of the different choice, the cost of the less-traveled direction. But life is at the end of the narrow road and not the wide one.

The Challenge

Do to others what you would have them do to you. Name one specific situation this week where you need to apply this: place yourself inside the other person's experience and ask what you would want in that situation. Do it. Not as law but as the natural act of the person who has been loved first.

One Prayer

Lord, let me spread the letter before you and trust that you see it. And let the golden rule be what forms my relationships - treating others from the inside of their experience. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you. Amen.
