Vessel & Altar
We hold this treasure in earthen vessels.

I call you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. - John 15:15b
Reflection
The mark of friendship, as Jesus names it, is full disclosure. The slave is kept in managed ignorance - told what to do, not why, not the whole picture. The friend is told everything. I have told you everything I heard from my Father. That is the basis of the relationship Jesus is offering: not service rendered in exchange for approval, but the full confidence of a friend who shares what he knows.
Sister, the anxiety that says you are not quite a friend yet - that you are still in the category of the servant who has not done enough to merit the full relationship - is exactly what this sentence addresses. He has already told you everything. The friendship is not something you are working toward. It is the relationship you are already in. The question is whether you will receive it at the size he is offering.
It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you. This too. The choosing preceded the knowing, preceded the faith, preceded everything you have done in response. You were chosen before you responded. The fruit you bear that remains - the love practiced, the faithfulness kept, the children formed, the friendships sustained across hard years - was appointed before you knew you were being appointed. Receive that. My heart is steadfast, the psalm says. Not because I earned the steadiness. Because I was chosen into it.
The Challenge
What would change in how you relate to God this week if you received the friendship at the size he is offering - not a servant's access, but a friend's full confidence? Name one thing you have been withholding from that relationship - a doubt, a grief, a question you have been too deferential to bring. Friends tell each other everything. Bring it.
One Prayer
Lord, you call me friend and tell me everything you heard from the Father. I do not always receive it at that size - I keep reverting to the servant's posture, waiting to earn what has already been given. Let my heart be steadfast in the friendship you have already extended. I will wake the dawn. Alleluia. Amen.
