Yesterday's Reflection

Saturday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time

Reflection

"For to me life is Christ, and death is gain," Paul writes from prison, honestly unsure whether he'd rather live or die. Both are good to him, genuinely, not as a way of dodging the question. He settles it by choosing to stay, for the sake of the people who still need him, rather than because staying is easier or more comfortable.

Tonight is the vigil of All Saints, the night the Church has kept for centuries as a night of preparation before a feast too big to walk into casually, the same way Christmas and Easter each get their own night of readiness beforehand. It's also the night our jar finally gets opened, a whole month of small noticed goodness read back out loud all at once.

One of my favorite things to do as a deacon each year is walk through our local Catholic cemetery, blessing the graves and praying for the dead. I like it best when my own boys come along, and something about walking those rows together, reading names off stones, tends to make All Saints and All Souls feel less like abstract feast days and more like something our own family is actually part of.

Universal Prayer

  • That we'd live this life fully while longing for the next, we pray to the Lord.
  • For all the faithful departed, especially those we'll remember at their graves this week, we pray to the Lord.
  • For the saints in heaven, whose feast we prepare for tonight, we pray to the Lord.
  • For the grace to prepare well for what's coming, not just rush past it, we pray to the Lord.

Faith in Action

If you're able, visit a Catholic cemetery this week and bless a few graves with holy water, praying for whoever's buried there, known or unknown to you. Tonight, open the jar from the table and read every note out loud together.

A Note for Parents

Tonight's the payoff for the whole month: open the jar together and take turns reading the notes aloud, all the good things noticed in each other since October 4. Don't rush through it. Let each one land, and let whoever's named in a note simply receive it without deflecting or arguing that it isn't really true.

Keep a light vigil fast today if your family can manage it, even something small like skipping a favorite snack or dessert. The Church once kept this whole day as a fast before the feast of All Saints, a tradition mostly forgotten now but worth trying at least once. After the jar, pray the Litany of the Saints together, even just five names from it, before bed.

If your family visits a cemetery this week, let the kids ask whatever questions come up, even hard ones about death. All Saints and All Souls exist precisely to give a family room to ask those questions honestly, with hope rather than fear attached to the answer.
