Yesterday's Reflection

Saturday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Reflection

A fig tree hasn't produced fruit in three years, and the owner wants it cut down. The gardener asks for one more year: "I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future." Not a guarantee. Just one more chance, worked for on purpose rather than granted out of laziness or avoidance.

Every family has a version of that fig tree: a habit that hasn't taken root yet, a kid still finding their footing at something everyone else seems to have figured out already, a practice you've tried and dropped more than once without quite giving up on it entirely. Tonight isn't about giving up on it. It's about deciding to tend it one more season, on purpose, with actual effort rather than just hoping it improves on its own.

Jesus opens today's Gospel with a harder note, about people who died suddenly and whether their deaths meant they were worse sinners than everyone else. He says no, but adds a warning: repent, or you'll perish the same way. It's a stark pairing with the fig tree that follows it, mercy and urgency sitting right next to each other, both true at once. Confession is also a fitting practice for today, whether as a family trip to the parish or a simple examination of conscience with your children at home.

Universal Prayer

  • That we'd be patient with what hasn't borne fruit yet, we pray to the Lord.
  • For anyone who feels like they've been given up on too soon, we pray to the Lord.
  • For priests who hear confessions, and for the grace to go ourselves, we pray to the Lord.
  • For the patience to tend what's slow to grow, we pray to the Lord.

Faith in Action

Go to confession as a family this weekend if you can, or sit down tonight and walk younger children through a simple examination of conscience using the Ten Commandments, one at a time, without rushing.

A Note for Parents

Ask your kids honestly: is there something in our family life that hasn't "borne fruit" yet, something you've tried and it hasn't stuck? A chore chart, a prayer habit, anything at all that got started with enthusiasm and quietly faded. Decide together to give it one more real try instead of quietly dropping it without ever naming that it's been dropped.

Check your parish's confession schedule this week and put a time on the calendar, even if it's just for the adults at first. Kids often follow once they see it's a normal, unremarkable part of the family's rhythm rather than something reserved for special occasions.

Talk, too, about the harder half of today's Gospel, the warning about repentance. It doesn't need to be frightening. It can simply mean: don't wait forever to fix what needs fixing, the same lesson as the fig tree, just said with more urgency.
