Today's Readings

Paul is unusually direct today. Something is genuinely wrong in the Corinthian community, and instead of addressing it, the people there had grown proud - almost boastful - about how open-minded they'd become. Paul's response isn't anger so much as grief: should you not rather have been sorrowful?
A little yeast leavens all the dough, he says. One thing tolerated quietly in a household - a habit, a way of speaking to each other, a pattern nobody wants to name - doesn't stay small. It works through everything else, slowly, until it's just how the family operates and nobody remembers when it started.
Think of what that actually looks like over the course of one ordinary week or month rather than in the abstract. A sharp tone that gets used once, then again, until it's simply how someone talks when they're tired. A small dishonesty - about a frustration, about being fine when you're not - that goes unquestioned because asking would mean an uncomfortable conversation. None of it arrives as a crisis. It arrives as the path of least resistance, taken often enough that it stops looking like a choice at all.
The Gospel gives the other half of the picture. Jesus heals a man's withered hand on the sabbath, in front of people who are watching specifically to catch him doing something wrong. He does the good thing anyway, in full view, regardless of who's hoping he'll fail. Clearing something out and doing the right thing under scrutiny turn out to be close cousins - both require caring more about what's actually true than about how it looks to the people watching.
Universal Prayer
- For our family, that we would name what needs to be cleared out before it works through everything else, we pray to the Lord.
- For the courage to do the right thing even when someone is watching and hoping we'll fail, we pray to the Lord.
- For all who are withered in body or spirit, that Christ would stretch out his hand to them the way he did in the synagogue, we pray to the Lord.
- As we begin this week within Our Lady's Thirty Days, for her nearness to our household, we pray to the Lord.
Faith in Action
Tonight, ask the family: is there something small in our house that's been let go on for too long - not a crisis, just a habit or pattern nobody's addressed? Name it together. You don't have to fix it tonight.
A Note for Parents
Tomorrow is the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Mary's birthday, one of the oldest Marian feasts on the calendar. If your family wants to mark it, start planning tonight: a small treat, blue as the traditional color, or simply naming one thing each person will give her this year, the way you'd bring a gift to a birthday.
