Yesterday's Reflection

Friday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Reflection

Jesus tells the crowd they're great at reading the weather but terrible at reading their own moment. "Settle the matter on the way," he says, meaning: fix what's fixable now, before it gets worse and ends up costing far more than it would have cost to settle it early. Paul, in the first reading, gives the gentler half: "bear with one another through love."

Every house has a version of this. Something small said wrong a few days ago, never quite cleared up, sitting quietly in a corner where everyone's noticed it but nobody's mentioned it. It's usually easier to just let it sit, and easier still to convince yourself it's already been forgotten by everyone involved. Jesus is nudging toward settling it instead, before the small thing becomes a habit of not-quite-speaking that's harder to name later.

Paul's line about bearing with one another isn't the opposite of settling things. It's the tone that makes settling things possible without it turning into a fight. Patience for what genuinely needs patience, and honesty for what's actually fixable today, aren't in competition with each other.

Universal Prayer

  • That we'd settle what needs settling instead of letting it sit, we pray to the Lord.
  • For families working through an unresolved argument right now, we pray to the Lord.
  • For the grace to say sorry before bed instead of carrying it to tomorrow, we pray to the Lord.
  • For patience with each other, and honesty when patience runs out, we pray to the Lord.

Faith in Action

Before bed tonight, anyone who's hurt anyone in the family says so, plainly, and the other person answers. Keep it short. The goal isn't a long conversation, just an honest one that actually clears the air rather than reopening the whole argument.

A Note for Parents

Ephesians 4:26 puts it plainly: "do not let the sun go down on your anger." Tonight is a good night to actually live that out as a family rule, not just quote it as something that sounds nice on a wall hanging.

Ask your kids if there's anything small still sitting unresolved from earlier this week, even something that seems too minor to bring up on its own. Small things left alone tend to grow quietly, the same way the debt in tonight's Gospel grows the longer it's ignored. Clear it tonight if you can, and don't insist on a full explanation, just an honest acknowledgment.

Model this yourself if there's anything unsettled between you and your spouse or another adult in the house. Kids notice far more than they let on when tension between parents goes unaddressed for days.
