God is speaking to a people who are in the middle of walking away from him - not afterward, not when they've found their way back, but right now, while they're still running. And what he says is not "I'm waiting until you're sorry." He says: come back. I'll gather you one by one. I'll give you shepherds who actually know what they're doing. I'll turn your mourning into joy.

Jesus explains why some people hear the same words and nothing happens: there are thorns growing in the soil. Not weeds someone planted on purpose, just thorns - the slow creep of worry about money and the future, the endless pull of wanting more, until those things grow up around the word and crowd out the light. It doesn't announce itself. That's what makes it dangerous.

This isn't about whether your family believes. It's about whether the faith has enough room in your home to actually grow.

• For our family, that we would hear God's invitation to come back even when we're still in the middle of wandering, we pray to the Lord.
• For the parents in our family, that we would be shepherds after God's own heart to the children he's given us, we pray to the Lord.
• For whoever in our family is in the thorny soil right now - where worry and wanting more are crowding out what matters most - that one thorn would get named and pulled today, we pray to the Lord.
• For those whose mourning has not yet turned to joy, that the promise would hold until it does, we pray to the Lord.

At dinner, try this: each person names one thing they worried about this week. Then ask: did worrying about it help? Jesus names anxiety as one of the thorns that chokes what God is trying to grow. You don't have to solve the worry tonight. Just name it. Then say together: "Lord, we give you this worry. Grow something better in its place."

The thorny soil is where most Catholic families live - not hostile to the faith, just crowded. The question is not whether your family believes, but whether the faith has enough space to bear fruit. Even naming this is a start.
