Paul kneels and prays that his readers would be "filled with all the fullness of God." Today's also the anniversary of Saint John Paul II's papal inauguration in 1978, when he stood before a crowd in St. Peter's Square and said, "Be not afraid," words that would come to define the tone of his entire twenty-six-year papacy.

Fear shows up in ordinary households too, not just in front of crowds of thousands: fear of a hard conversation, fear about money, fear about a child struggling at school in ways that haven't been said out loud yet. Name it plainly tonight instead of carrying it silently, the way silence tends to make a fear heavier rather than smaller.

Today's Gospel gives a harder companion reading: Jesus says he came not to establish peace but division, that households will split over him, parents against children and children against parents. It's not a comfortable verse to read on family movie night, but it's honest about something true: choosing to follow Christ seriously sometimes costs something in a household before it gives anything back, rather than only ever bringing the family closer the way it's easy to assume.

• That we'd be filled with God's fullness instead of fear, we pray to the Lord.
• Through Saint John Paul II's intercession, for courage in our own struggles, we pray to the Lord.
• For anyone in our family carrying a fear they haven't spoken out loud, we pray to the Lord.
• For the grace to trust God even when the news, the schedule, or the world feels like too much, we pray to the Lord.

Pray the second Luminous Mystery, the Wedding at Cana, together tonight. Name one married couple you know and bless their marriage by name before moving on to the next decade or ending the prayer.

John Paul II's line "be not afraid" became something of a motto for his entire papacy, said first at his 1978 inauguration and repeated for over two decades after, in dozens of languages, to crowds on every continent. Teach your kids it was more than a slogan, since he said it as a young pope from communist Poland who knew personally what real fear and real courage cost.

Have each person name one fear out loud tonight, whatever size it is, from something small like an upcoming test to something bigger nobody's quite said yet. Then pray for each fear by name before bed. Don't rush to fix any of them tonight. Just naming them out loud is most of the work, and fixing can wait for another conversation.

If tonight's Gospel about division comes up naturally, don't shy away from it. Tell your kids honestly that following Christ seriously has sometimes cost real relationships throughout history, and ask whether they've ever felt even a small version of that tension themselves.
