Jesus said something to his disciples that is worth reading slowly: whoever wants to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow. Whoever tries to save his life will lose it. Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Nahum's oracle gives us a picture of what the alternative looks like at the end. Nineveh was a great city that accumulated everything - power, wealth, conquest. Woe to the bloody city, he says. Full of lies. At the end: corpses, stripping, abandonment. Everything accumulated at any cost, and it came to nothing that lasted.

Jesus asks: what does a person gain if they get the whole world but lose themselves?

The cross is not always dramatic. For most of us it is the daily cost of doing what is right when something easier is available - telling the truth when the lie would protect us, choosing the family over the opportunity, giving what we have instead of holding what we want. That is what taking up the cross actually looks like, day after day.

The finding comes on the other side of the losing. Jesus says so plainly.

• For our family, for the grace to take up our daily crosses rather than finding ways around them, trusting that the finding comes on the other side, we pray to the Lord.
• For the children in our family, that they would learn early that a life built on accumulation without love is the Nineveh story, not the Gospel story, we pray to the Lord.
• For those in our family who are in the middle of losing something for the sake of following Jesus - that they would hold on until the finding, we pray to the Lord.
• Under the Immaculate Heart of Mary, who carried her cross the whole length of her Son's journey, for her company in ours, we pray to the Lord.

At dinner tonight: ask each person to name one small cross they carried today - something they did that cost them something, even a little. A kind word when they were tired. Telling the truth. Helping when they didn't want to. Name them without making them dramatic.

Then say together: Jesus said whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. The small crossings add up to a life.

The cross your children see you carry - with grace, without resentment, in the ordinary days - is the formation they will remember when they are grown. They don't need you to explain the theology of self-denial. They need to watch you do it.
