Yesterday's Reflection

Saint Charles Borromeo, Bishop

Reflection

Jesus tells a crowd following him that none of them has actually thought through what following him will cost. A builder who starts a tower without enough money to finish becomes a joke to everyone watching. A king marching to battle checks first whether his army can actually win. Following Jesus, he says, asks for that same honesty up front, not enthusiasm that runs out halfway through.

Today the Church remembers Charles Borromeo, a bishop who spent his life making sure the Church's own builders were properly prepared - reforming how priests were trained after the Council of Trent, insisting that willingness to serve wasn't enough without real formation behind it.

Kids ask a lot of honest questions about faith that grown-ups sometimes brush past because the answer feels complicated or because nobody wants to admit they don't fully know. Tonight is a chance to do the opposite - to actually sit with a hard question instead of rushing past it, the way Borromeo insisted the Church actually prepare people instead of just hoping for the best.

Notice, too, what Paul says right alongside the warning about counting the cost: work out your salvation, for God is the one who works in you both to desire and to accomplish it. Counting the cost was never meant to be a discouraging exercise. It's meant to be honest, and honesty about what following Christ actually requires tends to build a sturdier faith than enthusiasm alone ever could.

Universal Prayer

  • For the grace to actually count the cost of our faith instead of assuming it, we pray to the Lord.
  • For all who form children and adults in the faith, through Charles Borromeo's example, we pray to the Lord.
  • For the courage to ask hard questions about faith instead of avoiding them, we pray to the Lord.
  • For all in our Book of Names, we pray to the Lord.

Faith in Action

After supper, each person asks one honest question about the faith they've never asked out loud before. Answer what you can as a family. Write down the ones nobody can answer yet, and look them up together this week.

A Note for Parents

It's tempting to want to have every answer ready before a child asks a hard question. Charles Borromeo's whole life argues against that instinct - real formation takes real time, and pretending to already know everything isn't formation. It's just performance.

If your child asks something tonight you genuinely don't know how to answer, say so plainly. "I don't know, let's find out together" teaches more about actual faith than a rushed, half-right answer would. The Catechism, a parish priest, or a trustworthy resource are all fair places to look together this week.

Don't be surprised if the questions that come up tonight aren't the ones you expected. Kids often carry a real question much longer than adults realize before they finally say it out loud.
