Yesterday's Reflection

Saturday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Reflection

A fig tree has not produced fruit in three years, and the owner wants it cut down. The gardener asks for one more season, offering to dig around it and fertilize the ground himself, real effort, not just hope. It is a story about patience joined to actual work, not patience as a substitute for it.

At your stage of life, ask honestly who played the gardener for you over the years, someone who kept inviting, kept tending ground that looked barren for a long time before it ever produced anything. It is also worth asking who you might still be the gardener for now, a grandchild who has drifted from the faith, an old friend who stopped coming to Mass decades ago, someone it would be easy to write off given how much time has already passed without change.

Jesus opens tonight's Gospel with something harder: people who died suddenly, and whether that meant they were worse sinners than everyone else. He says no, but adds a real warning, repent, or the same thing happens to you. That urgency sits right next to the fig tree's patience, both true at once, and it does not soften with age. If anything, the urgency and the patience both grow sharper the closer a person gets to the actual end of their own season.

Confession remains a fitting practice at any stage of life, and this is a fair week to make time for it, not because time is short, but because it never stops being worth doing.

The Rosary Tonight

The Joyful Mysteries tonight, since it is Saturday. Offer the second mystery, the Visitation, for one person you have not given up on, however many barren seasons have already passed.

Prayer of the Faithful

  • For the grace to be patient gardeners for the people we have not given up on, we pray to the Lord.
  • For priests who hear confessions, and for the grace to go ourselves, we pray to the Lord.
  • For all who have died, that whatever fruit their lives bore is gathered fully into God's kingdom, we pray to the Lord.

Something to Do

Name one person you have quietly written off as unlikely to change. Reach out to them once this week, gently, without pressure, the way a patient gardener would.
