Yesterday's Reflection

Saturday of the Twenty-Seventh Week in Ordinary Time

Reflection

A woman in the crowd calls out something every mother longs to hear said about her child: blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts that nursed you. It is aimed straight at Mary, and it is true. Jesus does not correct it so much as widen it. Blessed, rather, are those who hear the word of God and observe it. Being someone's mother was never the whole of Mary's blessedness, even for Mary.

A long life accumulates roles the way a river accumulates silt: mother, father, grandparent, widow or widower, the one everyone still calls for advice. Every one of those roles is real and often good. Jesus's answer tonight is a quiet reminder that none of them was ever meant to be the entire measure of a life before God. Hearing the word and actually living it is available to anyone listening, at any age, regardless of which roles have filled or emptied over the decades.

Paul's first reading says something that lands right alongside this: through faith, everyone becomes a child of God, clothed with Christ, no longer ranked by the old categories that used to divide people into who mattered more. That is worth hearing plainly if age itself has started to feel like a category that quietly counts you out of things that used to matter.

Blessedness was never about which chapter of life you are in. It was always about hearing and doing, and that chapter is still open tonight, however many decades are behind it.

The Rosary Tonight

The Joyful Mysteries tonight, since it is Saturday. Offer the fourth mystery, the Presentation, for every role you have carried in this life, and for the grace to hold none of them as your whole identity.

Prayer of the Faithful

  • For the grace to be known for hearing God's word and living it, whatever roles fill our days, we pray to the Lord.
  • For grandparents and elders everywhere, that they would know their worth is not measured by usefulness, we pray to the Lord.
  • For all who have died, that they hear the word of God face to face, we pray to the Lord.

Something to Do

Name one role you have carried for so long it has started to feel like your whole identity. Spend ten minutes today doing something entirely outside that role, just to remember there is more to you than it.
