Eventide & Altar

We hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. Paul's four antitheses carry a particular weight when read by someone who has actually lived through their content: afflicted but not constrained, perplexed but not driven to despair, persecuted but not abandoned, struck down but not destroyed. These are not assertions about how things should be. They are testimony about how things have actually been.

You have been struck down in some version. Most people who have lived long enough have. The marriage that nearly broke, or did break. The child who wandered and stayed wandered. The diagnosis. The bereavement. The failure that still has a shape in memory. And also - if you are honest about the whole account, not just the difficult parts - you are still here. Still praying. The power visibly not your own, precisely because the vessel is so obviously clay.

Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing. Not those who avoid the tears, not those who stay strong enough not to weep. The weeping is the sowing. The psalm does not say they stopped weeping on the way out - it says they went forth weeping, carrying the seed. And they came back with sheaves.

James said yes to the cup before he knew what it would cost. The cup was specific, and the drinking was real, and the first apostle to die for the faith is the one who asked for the best seat. There is something in that pattern that only becomes legible over a long life. The thing you were asking for and the thing you received are often, finally, the same thing in different form.

The Joyful Mysteries - the seed sown in the hidden years before anyone saw what was growing. Pray them for whatever in your life has been sown in tears and has not yet come to sheaves. The harvest is not in doubt. It is not yet in view.

• In gratitude for the years when we were struck down and did not stay there - and in trust that the power holding us together has been God's all along, we pray to the Lord.
• For those still weeping on the way out, still carrying the seed with no sheaves yet visible, that the going-forth would be enough and the returning would come, we pray to the Lord.
• On the feast of Saint James, for all who said yes before they understood and are now in the middle of the drinking, that the cup would be held with the hands of faith, we pray to the Lord.

Name the cup you have drunk in your life - the thing that came when you were asking for something else and turned out to be, finally, the greater gift. Hold it before God today in gratitude, not as a finished story but as evidence of a pattern you have come to trust.
