God calls the rebellious back while they are still in their rebellion. This is not a small thing. The invitation does not wait for repentance to be completed or for the turning to be proven. It comes into the middle of the wandering - one from a city, two from a clan - and it gathers. The promise is not conditional on arrival but on the willingness to begin moving.

You have seen this pattern work across a long life. You have watched people you love wander and come back, or wander and not come back, or begin to come back in ways they did not recognize as returning. The gathering happens in ways you cannot always see from the outside. What Jeremiah names as the Lord's movement - the scattering followed by the gathering, the mourning followed by the dancing - is not a metaphor. It is how it has actually gone.

The thorn diagnosis in the Gospel is worth sitting with at this point in life. The worldly anxiety and the lure of riches that Jesus names - you have seen what these look like across decades. Not dramatic apostasy, just the slow crowding out of what matters by what doesn't, year by year, until the word is present but unfruitful. And you have seen the alternative too: the people who stayed in good soil, who bore fruit quietly across a long life, who you would recognize as the hundredfold even if they would not claim the title.

What Jeremiah promises for Israel is what you have either received or are still waiting for, or both at once. The virgins shall make merry and dance, and young men and old as well. The mourning turned to joy. If there is mourning that has not yet turned, God has not forgotten it. The one who scattered is also the one who gathers.

The Sorrowful Mysteries today. Each one is a movement from the thorny soil toward the good - from Gethsemane to the resurrection still coming. Pray them for whoever in your life is still in the middle of the sowing in tears, not yet at the carrying-back-the-sheaves.

• For those we love who are still in the middle of wandering, that the invitation - return, rebellious children - would reach them while they are still on the way back, we pray to the Lord.
• For those in the thorny soil of worldly anxiety, that one specific thorn would be named and pulled before it crowds out everything else, we pray to the Lord.
• For the mourning that has not yet turned to joy - in our own life and in the lives of people we carry - that the Lord who promised the dancing would be trusted with the waiting, we pray to the Lord.

Think of one person you have been praying for across many years - someone whose return or healing you have been waiting a long time for. Bring that specific person before God today. Not with the urgency of someone who needs to see results, but with the patience of someone who has lived long enough to know that the Lord gathers in his own time and by his own means.
