Eventide & Altar

The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. Read that line tonight without softening it and without rushing past it. You have buried more people by now than most, and you know the particular ache of hearing comfort that sounds like it was written for someone who hasn't actually lost anyone yet. This verse was not written for that person. It was written for you.

To the foolish, Wisdom says, the dead seem simply gone, their passing a disaster. But they are at peace. That is not a denial of grief. It is a correction of what grief is allowed to conclude. What looks final from where you're standing is not final from where God is standing, and a long life gives you more chances than most to have watched that distinction prove true.

Tonight is the day your own practice for the month opens - a small book of names, kept somewhere near you, where you write down the people you are praying for by name rather than mourning only in general. This is not a new devotion invented for this month. It descends from something the Church has done since at least the fourth century, when the names of the living and the dead were read aloud at every Mass. Your book is that same gesture, smaller and closer to home.

Jesus adds the plainest promise available: everyone who believes in the Son should have eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. Write a name tonight, and let that promise be the one you're actually praying over it.

The Joyful Mysteries tonight, since it is Monday. Offer the second mystery, the Visitation, for everyone whose name you write in your book tonight, that they be visited by the same mercy Elizabeth received.

• For all the faithful departed, that they rest fully in the hand of God, we pray to the Lord.
• For the grace to grieve honestly without letting grief conclude more than it should, we pray to the Lord.
• For all who have died, especially the first names written in our book tonight, we pray to the Lord.

Open a small notebook tonight and write down the name of one person who has died. Say "eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord" over it. Keep the notebook near you and add a name most nights this month.
