We did not follow cleverly devised myths. Peter says this flatly, from his own experience. He was on the mountain. He heard the voice. He saw the face that shone like the sun and fell on his face in the dirt and was touched by the hand of the one he had just seen transfigured, who said: rise, do not be afraid.

That is Peter's testimony. Not a doctrine - a memory. The kind that stays.

Daniel's vision in the first reading is from the other end of the same picture: the Ancient One on a throne of flames, a river of fire before him, thousands ministering, books opened, and then one like a Son of Man received the dominion that will not be destroyed. What Peter saw on the mountain was the beginning of that scene, made visible for three frightened fishermen in Galilee.

The prophetic word is like a lamp shining in a dark place, Peter says, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. You are still in the lamp-time. The full light has not come yet. But there is a lamp - reliable, already shining - and the dark place you are in is not outside its reach.

You have probably had something you could call an eyewitness moment. A prayer answered in a way you could not explain. A death that should have broken your faith and instead clarified it. A Mass where the cloud came down, briefly, and you knew. You are not required to talk about it. But you can hold it as Peter held his: we were there. We heard it. It was not a myth.

The Luminous Mysteries. The fourth mystery is the Transfiguration itself - pray it as something that happened to people you know from the rest of the Gospels, not as an abstract event. Peter is there. James is there. John is there. They fall on their faces and are touched and get up and see only Jesus. Pray this mystery for whoever in your life needs to look up and see only him.

• In gratitude for the eyewitness moments - the times when the lamp shone clearly and we knew, and carried what we knew through the dark stretches after, we pray to the Lord.
• For those in the dark place right now, that the prophetic word would reach them as a lamp shining and not be mistaken for distance or silence, we pray to the Lord.
• For all who fell on their faces before something overwhelming this year and were touched by the hand that says rise, do not be afraid, in thanksgiving, we pray to the Lord.

Name your eyewitness moment. The specific one - not a general sense of God, but the particular time when you heard or saw or knew something that you have carried since. Hold it before the Lord as Peter held his. It was not a myth. That is enough for tonight.
