Dear Catholic Parents,

Jesus stands up in the synagogue at Nazareth and reads from Isaiah: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me... to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free." Then he says the line that should stop every reader cold: "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." His own neighbors, offended that God's mercy might reach beyond their town, try to throw him off a cliff. Paul, meanwhile, tells the Corinthians he came to them "in weakness and fear and much trembling," so their faith would rest on God's power, not human wisdom. Freedom proclaimed. Freedom refused by the ones who should have welcomed it most.

1. Nepal's Deadliest Disaster in Recorded History - the Church Is Already There

A glacial collapse in the Himalayas triggered catastrophic flash flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border last Wednesday, killing more than 800 people with roughly 3,000 still missing - entire settlements "wiped out," according to aid workers. Bishop A. Elias Zaidan, chair of the USCCB's Committee on International Justice and Peace, called on the world to mobilize greater aid, noting Catholic Relief Services is coordinating directly with Caritas Nepal. Caritas has already begun operating community kitchens and distributing food, water, and shelter - even as authorities warn of a second flood.

2. Eleven Members of Congress Demand Pakistan Free an Abducted Christian Teen

A bipartisan group of eleven US lawmakers, led by Rep. Chris Smith, sent a letter to Pakistan's government demanding protection for Neha Faqir, an 18-year-old Christian woman allegedly abducted in March, forced into an Islamic seminary, and converted against her will. A Pakistani court has already rejected her family's petition for her return. Five months later, she has not been allowed to see them.

3. Flash Flood Tears Through the Grand Canyon - One Dead, Roughly 15 Still Missing

A powerful flash flood swept through Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area Saturday afternoon, destroying nearly every footbridge over Bright Angel Creek and forcing the air evacuation of 62 hikers and campers. The body of a 46-year-old man was recovered Sunday near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River. As of this morning, park officials are still trying to account for roughly 15 people who may have been hiking, backpacking, or camping in the affected corridor - the number has shifted daily as more information comes in. One hiker described a four-foot wall of debris rushing toward his group; a couple watched the bridge they'd crossed fifteen minutes earlier wash away as they fled by helicopter.

Faith Lens for the Home: Isaiah's words about proclaiming liberty aren't only about political captivity - sometimes freedom means a helicopter arriving in time. Ask your family: "What does it look like to trust God in the middle of genuine danger, before you know how the story ends?" St. Raymond Nonnatus - August 31

Born in Catalonia around 1204, delivered by surgery after his mother died in childbirth (hence "Nonnatus," meaning "not born"), Raymond joined the Mercedarian Order, founded specifically to ransom Christian captives from Muslim slavers in North Africa. When funds ran out, he offered himself as a hostage in exchange for other prisoners' freedom - and when he continued preaching the Gospel in captivity, his captors bored a hole through his lips and padlocked them shut to silence him. He is patron of childbirth, midwives, and - fittingly for today's Gospel - those who work to free captives.

Ask at dinner: "Raymond gave up his own freedom so others could be free. Where does our family see that kind of trade happening today - someone giving up something so someone else can have what they need?"

Give to Catholic Relief Services' Nepal emergency fund at crs.org. Pray for Neha Faqir by name. And pray for the missing hikers still unaccounted for at the Grand Canyon and the rescuers searching for them tonight.
