Last Wednesday at the ESPYs, the #1 NFL draft pick - Catholic daily Mass attendee, son of Cuban refugees - pushed his mother Elsa down the red carpet himself. Elsa has MS and uses a wheelchair. Fernando pushed her the whole way, both of them smiling. The image went wide. No speech. No statement. Just a son and his mother at the biggest sports awards show of the year. He has said of her: "You taught me that toughness doesn't need to be loud. It can be quiet and strong." It was. It is.

St. Apollinaris, Bishop and Martyr - July 20

Sent to Ravenna by St. Peter himself to be its first bishop. He was beaten and expelled from the city multiple times by pagan authorities. Each time he came back. He kept healing the sick, preaching, baptizing, and building the church - through beating after beating, exile after exile. He died from injuries sustained in his final expulsion, around 75 AD. He is one of the earliest martyrs of the Western Church. Something greater than Solomon was here - and Apollinaris kept bearing witness to it through every blow.

Ask at dinner: "St. Apollinaris kept coming back after every beating and exile. What does that kind of persistence require? Is there something our family has given up on too quickly?"
